Kylie Jenner puts her own spin on the natural dining room

While dining spaces can be main hubs for lively entertaining at home, taking a low-key approach to decorating is a proven way to ensure a serene backdrop for a lively communal space.

We’re taking inspiration from Kylie Jenner, who recently shared a video on her TikTok page of her singing the ABCs with her son at her dining table. In true Jenner fashion, the room is sleek and sophisticated, with a greige loveseat sitting against the smooth stone table. Meanwhile, wooden bowls bring a touch of nature to the modern space.

Decorating with neutral tones is a common practice for many homeowners, and experts say the dining room is a great choice for the color palette to flourish.

“A natural dining space, characterized by soft hues, organic materials and minimalist design, exudes a calm and welcoming ambiance,” says designer Nina Lichtenstein. “The neutral color palette, comprised of shades of white, beige, gray and soft earth tones, creates a backdrop that is both expansive and comforting. This simplicity allows the focus to be on form, texture and subtle details, making the dining room a peaceful refuge from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Although neutral tones can be more subdued than their colorful contemporaries, Lichtenstein says maintaining visual interest is key to the success of a neutral room, which can benefit from textures and patterns.

“Incorporate various textures to add dimension,” she says. “Mix natural wood finishes with woven placemats, linen table runners and ceramic tableware. Textured wall treatments, such as shiplap or grasscloth wallpaper, can also enhance tactile appeal. Subtle patterns in neutral tones can create visual intrigue without overwhelming the space. Think patterned upholstery on dining chairs, geometric rugs or delicate patterns on table linens.

Additionally, as Jenenr did by implementing wooden bowls, introducing nature-inspired pieces can bring harmony to a contemporary space.

“Bring the outdoors in with things like potted plants, fresh flowers, and botanical centerpieces,” says Lichtenstein. “A large wooden dining table with a vibrant finish or a stone sideboard can anchor the room with organic beauty.”

Finally, consider incorporating decor on dining tables, as Lichtenstein notes that these are the centerpieces of most dining rooms.

“Elevate your table decor with layered place settings,” she says. “Start with a neutral tablecloth or runner, add dishes, plates and napkins to mix and match. Finish with stylish flatware and glassware for a complete look.
