Jumping off the edge of a cliff leads to the death of a skydiving instructor

Skydiving instructor Jose de Alencar Lima Junior died on Sunday after jumping from a 250-metre cliff. Lima lived in Germany, but traveled to Brazil to visit family. During the trip he went to Pedra Bonita in Sao Conrado to try a speed fly, which is similar to paragliding but includes elements of skydiving and freeriding.

His sister-in-law, who did not want to be named, said: “We have no idea what could have happened. But he was a professional skydiver for 20 years. He had a lot of experience. What happened was an accident.”

According to the New York PostLima served as a paratrooper in the Brazilian Army’s Parachute Infantry Brigade, highlighting his experience. Authorities believe that his equipment used on the fatal day was defective.

Visitors watched in horror as Lima disappeared from the cliff and many waited to see if his parachute would appear. However, it soon became clear that he had fallen.

Witnesses at the scene report seeing Lima before his fall. Due to the wooded location, it took several hours for the rescue team to reach Lima. By the time rescuers reached him, he was dead. Lima tragically fell 800 feet onto the rocks at the base of the cliff.

The New York Post explained that activities such as speed flying at this location are completed from an official ramp. In addition, the Clube Sao Conrado de Voo Livre (CSCLV) controls access to Pedra Bonita.

The CSCLV stated: “The pilot did not use the ramp for take-off. The place he chose for take-off is bad and even forbidden. The CSCLV is not responsible for the incident. With that clarification, may the pilot be at peace rest.”

According to his sister-in-law, he was scheduled to visit Dubai this week to perform a series of jumps. She told me Globo“That was a dream for him, to jump from different places in the world.”

Lima’s family is currently in mourning. The fatal accident is under investigation.
