New this year: wagon rides and trolley tours offered at the Founding Day Festival

Wagon and trolley rides offer a way to explore Uniontown during the Founding Day festival on June 29.

Visitors to this year’s Founding Day Festival will have the chance to take part in a new event, a wagon ride or a longer historical tour.

“We will have two horse-drawn Conestoga wagons running at a time. We can take five or six people there, and they will rotate throughout the day,” said Greg Hearn, event coordinator.

The event not only offers entertainment, but also a bit of education.

“The kids will love the horses, and it’s fascinating to ride the wagon and see how people traveled,” Hearn said.

He participates in the annual National Road Festival Conestoga wagon train and loves sharing the experience with others.

“These rides will be shorter and the horses won’t be able to go all day, but we will offer rides from about 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.,” Hearn said.

There will be a second option if visitors miss the horse-drawn carts or want to do both.

A historical tractor/wagon tour will also be underway.

“We have a big tractor with an awning to protect you from the sun. It has picnic tables, railings and a step up and can accommodate 50 to 60 people at a time,” Hearn said.

He plans to connect a microphone and speaker to the wagon so narrator Pete Malik can share Uniontown’s historic sites on the tour.

“It will be a longer ride, it will include the history of Uniontown and we will stop at different places along the route to learn more,” Hearn said.

These visits will continue all day from 11 a.m. at 19 ‘o clock. Both rides are free for visitors and no registration is necessary.
