Her ex-boyfriend is behind bars.

And no human can understand the horrific attack unleashed on the tiny Temiskaming Shores, about 90 miles north of North Bay.

But this is Canada in 2024 and there are things we never thought we would see darkening our streets on a daily basis. Big cities, medium-sized towns and hamlets. Nowhere seems safe.

On Sunday around 6 p.m., a 16-year-old girl got off the bus in Cobalt after work. Destination: Home.

But there was someone waiting for her at the bus stop.

As she crossed the road, a car rammed the beautiful brunette into a pile of rocks. CTV Northern Ontario reports.

According to one GoFundMe campaign for the victim and her familyThe driver jumped out of the car and jumped on the girl. Using a machete, the maniac began swinging at the seriously injured teenager, they say.

In the frenzy of bloodlust, her family says, he cut off her left hand, broke her right arm and left it “hanging in ribbons.”

“He proceeded to mutilate her, hitting her body and head with the machete. He then fled, leaving her to die and was reported to police by his mother,” a relative of the girl wrote on GoFundMe.

A nearby neighbor and his wife told CTV they heard screams and went to help as the suspect fled in his vehicle. The couple performed CPR until the ambulance arrived.

They later found part of the victim’s severed arm, the news station reported.

“Kaylie was taken to CHEO in Ottawa, Children’s Hospital, for treatment. She made it through her 16-hour brain surgery and only time will tell the story of her journey,” the family member wrote on the GoFundMe, which had surpassed $53,000 as of Wednesday morning. “Kaylie is currently stable and her family lives in Ottawa. Kaylie is strong and resilient and so loved, we pray and hope for her recovery.”

OPP have not released the name of the 18-year-old suspect, who was later arrested in nearby Haileybury. He’s charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and… ahem… breach of suspended sentence.

The GoFundMe, which names the victim and includes photos of her and her family, identifies him as Phillip Rivard-Gagnon, the girl’s ex-boyfriend.

According to CTV, the suspect only turned 18 a week before the horrific attack. Of course, thanks to our vaunted Youth Criminal Justice Act in Canada, monsters under the age of 18 can commit all kinds of heinous crimes. A dozen dead? See you in three years – max. And there are jerks in the academic world who think the age for wayward young people should be raised to twenty.

But if he is guilty of the charges, the suspect in the Cobalt attack appears to have dawdled. Too bad for him.

The young man remains in custody and will appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Haileybury on November 12. The charges against him have not been tested in court.

In the GoFundMe message, the family begs for a little common sense to prevail in dealing with the alleged attacker.

“Finally, we ask the community to email or call the Haileybury Crown attorney’s office to advocate that this is not another catch and release,” the family said.

“Phillip must stay behind bars to protect our other innocent youth!”

Will that happen? Doubtful.

Horrors like this were once an anomaly in this country. They are now woven into our fabric and those in high positions are either unaware of them or simply don’t care.
