Rain or shine, Jim Corbett is the perfect destination for you to plan a getaway

Nestled in the lush greenery of Kumaon, voco Jim Corbett stands out as a hidden gem, providing a peaceful retreat for nature lovers and those seeking a bit of luxury. Our recent two-day stay at this beautiful destination offered a wonderful insight into local culture and flavors, although rain spoiled our safari plans.

The drive from Dehradun to Jim Corbett was a scenic drive that took us along winding roads lined with tall trees and hills. As we advanced, the air was cool, carrying the earthy scent of rain-soaked earth. Arriving at Voco Jim Corbett, we were immediately captivated by the sights and sounds of the surrounding nature, with the Kosi River flowing nearby, its waters glistening under the cloudy sky.

From our arrival we were welcomed in true Kumaoni style, surrounded by the harmonious melodies of a bagpiper. As we settled in, we felt an immediate connection to the region’s rich traditions. A warm welcome, complete with a refreshing glass of buransh (rhododendron) juice. We were also offered a sample of the region’s traditional sweet, Bal Mithai. This warm welcome set the tone for what would be a memorable experience.

The stay
The hotel has 70 well-appointed, modern and spacious rooms, each adorned with elegant decor. Our room, overlooking the Kosi River, became a peaceful sanctuary amid the rain-soaked landscape. With each drop that fell, the surroundings transformed into a lush and vibrant canvas, offering a different kind of beauty that only the monsoon could bring.

On the day of our arrival, the rain fell incessantly and the hotel staff, always attentive, sent a sumptuous afternoon tea to our room. This delicious spread included everything from rolls and macaroons to local dishes and tea. As an unexpected treat, they provided a local gin cocktail mix, complete with a whimsical recipe card and all the bartending tools we needed to create our own concoctions – an inviting way to embrace the rainy atmosphere.

As evening approached, I ventured to the charming riverfront Kosi Bar & Kitchen, where the atmosphere was perfect for relaxing. We sipped on signature Kumaoni cocktails, including gin infused with Timur, a variety of pepper native to the region, and a locally distilled coffee liqueur called Bandarful, reminiscent of Kahlua. With executive chef Tenzin Losel commanding the kitchen, the culinary experience at voco Jim Corbett was simply extraordinary.

The food
Our gastronomic adventure continued with an exquisite variety of Mediterranean dishes: from cheeses combined with salty marinated olives, peppers on toasted bread and crispy zucchini croquettes that burst with flavor. The fragrant garlic prawns and delicate fried fish were a symphony of textures and flavors. However, it was the Indian food that really stole the show. We indulged in a selection of kebabs, including Bharwan Aloo (stuffed potatoes) and the standout Kumaoni Murgh Tikka, where succulent chicken is marinated in aromatic spices and grilled to perfection. Accompanied by Amritsari Fish and Bhanjeere Ka Jhinga (tender prawns), we experienced food heaven.

The next evening we were treated to Kumauni Thali, a culinary masterpiece prepared by Chef Losel at Veda. This indulgent thali featured a variety of dishes including the succulent Kumaoni Chicken Curry and the aromatic Mutton Curry that enveloped the senses in a warm embrace. Aloo Thewani, seasoned potatoes, and Bhatt Ki Churdkani, black soya cooked to perfection, added depth to the meal, while Maduva Ka Roti, thick wheat flour flatbread, provided the ideal accompaniment. The meal ended with Jhangora Kheer, a traditional sweet made with rice and milk, a delicate finish that danced on the tongue. Breakfast the next morning was a feast, with a variety of continental, North Indian and Kumaoni dishes, complemented by the soothing melodies of a flutist serenading us.

In and around
During our stay the weather was gloomy but lovely. Heavy rains added a magical touch to the landscape, transforming the area into a vibrant green paradise. From our room we could see the Kosi River, its banks lined with thick foliage. Although the rains meant I couldn’t go on safari, the hotel offered plenty of comforts and delights to keep me entertained. Our afternoons were filled with cozy teas in our room, where the staff served a delicious array of treats.

Although the rains prevented me from embarking on a jungle safari, Jim Corbett offered plenty of activities to keep me entertained. In the hotel’s lush gardens, we find ample opportunities for rejuvenation: morning yoga sessions amid greenery, leisurely afternoons by the pool and lively games of badminton on the manicured lawns.

We spent the afternoons relaxing by the pool with a cocktail in hand, soaking up the peaceful surroundings. And when it was time to relax, the resort’s Tattva Spa was our sanctuary. Greeted by warm staff, I enjoyed a Swedish massage and a rejuvenating facial. The masseuse’s deft touch, combined with soothing aromas and soothing music, allowed me to escape into a world of tranquility.

In the end, our stay at voco Jim Corbett was a beautiful blend of luxury and nature, where Kumaon charm met modern elegance. Despite the rain, the hotel provided a perfect refuge, leaving me feeling renewed and eager to return.
