The young take flight

Young people from the Vernon area had the opportunity to fly over the North Okanagan on Saturday.

Discover Aviation Day at Vernon Regional Airport gave people ages eight to 20 the chance to sit in the passenger seat for a flight in a small plane.

The event had 159 participants throughout the day, which organizers said was a redemption of sorts after last year’s plans were foiled.

“After two frustrating false starts last year due to wildfire smoke, the Discover Aviation 2024 event was a huge success,” Discover Aviation Vernon wrote on social media.

The event aims to interest young people in aviation. It featured small planes, which gave passengers a better understanding of what it means to fly.

The event was organized by the Vernon Flying Club and COPA Flight #65. More than 50 club members and friends volunteered to make this year’s event happen.

“Our guests were registered, processed, trained, briefed, flown, provided with refreshments, presented with certificates and had their photos taken without a single problem!” said the organizers.

“Thank you to all the Junior Airmen, their parents, grandparents, siblings and friends for coming to visit us at the airport and allowing us to share our passion with you. »

Discover Aviation Day is an annual event aimed at introducing young people to the world of flying aircraft.
