Two-time F1 world champion Fernando Alonso has stirred the pot over Aston Martin’s possible swoop for Adrian Newey.

The design genius, considered by many to be the greatest engineer in sporting history, will leave Red Bull at the end of the year.

The 65-year-old has been an integral part of the team’s success since leaving McLaren in 2006.

During this period, he helped win 13 world titles during two dominant periods, designing race-winning cars for Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen.

Since this surprise revelation, rumors have been circulating about the Briton’s future, with Ferrari considered the favorite to secure his signature.

Meanwhile, Newey’s manager and close friend Eddie Jordan previously refused to rule out the possibility of him retiring from the sport to spend more time with his family, admitting all options remained open.

However, in a stunning twist to the ongoing saga, Newey is understood to have opened talks with Aston Martin boss Lawrence Stroll after being given a tour of the team’s facilities at Silverstone.

The team’s lead driver, Fernando Alonso, has spoken of his admiration for the design mastermind and has already admitted he would be looking forward to teaming up next year.

Ahead of this weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix, the 42-year-old remained tight-lipped when asked about the possibility of a deal.

“I read the rumors,” he said. “But this comes from the same source and the same website from a week ago (saying) he was at Ferrari and (there would be an) announcement at 12 o’clock before the race in Canada.

When asked what he would say to Newey to convince him to sign, he replied: “That stays between him and me.”
