78% of women consider aggression on the road to be a “serious problem”


The Women’s World Car of the Year is celebrating International Women Drivers’ Day today (June 24) by drawing attention to female drivers’ concerns about aggressive behavior on the roads.

A survey of female drivers by the Czech online magazine Zena v aute.cz contacted 1,485 female drivers from around the world through an online questionnaire. It revealed that 78% of female drivers consider road aggression to be a serious problem and 69% of those questioned think that aggressive behavior on the roads is increasing.

The survey was carried out in May 2024 in 20 countries around the world (Australia, Austria, Belgium, Colombia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, India, Italy, New Zealand, Pakistan, Poland, Serbia, Spain). , Switzerland, United Kingdom and United States).

Troubles while driving

According to the study, there are three main topics that concern female drivers: aggressive driving (22%), accidents (20%) and driving in reduced visibility (20%), followed by skidding (13%) and collisions with animals. (9%). Around 16% of those surveyed think there is cause for concern.

It is interesting to examine the responses from country to country. For example, aggressive drivers are more of a concern for respondents in the United States (82%), Spain (31%), and Poland (38%), while accidents as a top fear were represented in responses from Italy (51%), Poland (35%). %) and Germany (31%).

Driving in reduced visibility is a concern mainly for female drivers in the UK (52%), Germany (50%) and Poland (20%). The survey also found that 78% of female drivers consider road aggression a serious problem and 69% of respondents believe aggressive road behavior is increasing.

According to Sabina Kvasova, the majority of female drivers worldwide (55%) are sporadically confronted with aggressive behavior on the roads. Only 25% of those surveyed experience aggressive behavior on a daily basis and 20% several times a week.

What the drivers offer

When asked what action should be taken against attackers, female drivers around the world are mostly supportive of what action should be taken.criminal sanctions (45%)specialized psychological therapy program (27%), training of future drivers (20%) and prevention campaigns (6%).

Looking at specific countries, strict penalties against aggressive drivers are most supported by female drivers in Denmark and Serbia (97%), followed by the United States (54%) and Italy (50%). The obligation to undergo a specialized psychological therapy program for drivers and the subsequent psychological assessment of the driver’s mental abilities enjoy strong support in Denmark and Serbia (97%), the United States (54%) as well as than in Poland and Colombia (50%).

Future drivers must be made aware of the risks associated with road aggression during their training – a proposed measure supported in the United Kingdom (43%), Italy (42%) and Spain (30%). Prevention campaigns about the dangers of aggression were mentioned mainly in the responses of respondents in the United States (45%), Poland (37%) and Germany (24%).

With this study, the Women’s World Car of the Year aims to raise awareness of female drivers’ views regarding their driving behavior. International Women Drivers Day also celebrates the importance of women expressing their opinions and experiences about cars on social media.
