Michigan’s highest court to consider whether to further limit life without parole sentences

DETROIT (AP) — The Michigan Supreme Court will consider whether to ban automatic life prison sentences for people aged 19 or 20 when they have been involved in a major crime.

The court took an important step in 2022 by declaring mandatory

Non-parole sentences for 18-year-olds violated the Michigan Constitution’s ban on “cruel or unusual” punishment.

The court will now determine whether this principle should be extended to people aged 19 or 20.

The Supreme Court said it will hear arguments in the coming months in the cases from Wayne and Oakland counties.
