A few days before the first round of the French legislative elections, far-right leader Jordan Bardella declared himself ready to take the reins of the country.

Bardella of the National Rally (RN) is the favorite to become Prime Minister of France. The RN-led right-wing bloc is expected to win the most seats in the election and push President Emmanuel Macron’s ruling centrist coalition into a third place.

During a press conference during which he presented his party’s electoral program, Bardella declared that the RN was the only party capable of meeting the people’s expectations.

“The National Rally is today the only movement capable of implementing in a reasonable manner the aspirations clearly expressed by the French people. In three words: we are ready,” Bardella said, according to AFP.

France will hold legislative elections on June 30 and July 7. Macron called early elections after dissolving the country’s parliament following a drubbing in the European parliamentary elections. In European polls, the RN received more than double the votes of Macron’s coalition of five centrist parties.

Bardella sets tone for French far-right government

Bardella said seven years of Macron’s presidential mandate – which he called “macronism” – had weakened France.

Accusing Macron of failure, Bardella explained how he intends to put France on the right track.

Bardella said that if the RN was elected by a majority, it would implement an anti-immigration and security program that would facilitate the expulsion of foreigners convicted of crimes, according to AFP.

Bardella further stated that his government would increase the purchasing power of the population and restore public order.

Bardella presented his RN party as a party that defends law and order. He said voters had a choice between his party’s patriotic and republican values and the anti-Semitism of the left.

The left unites to face the rise of the right

Amid the rise of the far right, the French left came together in a new coalition called the New Popular Front (NPF).

The NPF includes the socialists, the Greens, the communists and the far-left Insoumis parties.

According to The Guardian, the NPF manifesto includes:

The Guardian reports that the NFP manifesto contains the following promises:

  • Raise the minimum wage

  • Freeze the prices of essential goods and energy

  • Reverse the increase in the retirement age from 64 to 60

  • Increase taxes on income, property, wealth and inheritance

According to opinion polls published so far, the far-right bloc led by the RN is expected to be the largest. The FNP should come in second place and Macron’s centrists, a distant third.
