Man allegedly tried to hijack TRAX after missing his stop

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — A Salt Lake City man was arrested after allegedly attempting to hijack a UTA TRAX train after missing its stop on Saturday, June 22.

According to court documents, Isaiah Spendlove, 26, began yelling at the TRAX operator while banging on the door in an attempt to force the operator to reverse the train to the stop he had missed.

The TRAX operator, along with another passenger on the train, began yelling at Spendlove, telling him he needed to leave the train. Spendlove allegedly began “swinging his fists” at the other passenger in what police described as an attempted assault.

When officers arrived on scene, Spendlove allegedly resisted being restrained and removed from the train. Officers could have safely restrained Spendlove using a restraint and taken him to the Salt Lake County Metropolitan Jail. Police reported that Spendlove repeatedly refused to identify himself, only revealing his name once they arrived at the jail.

Spendlove was charged with several counts, including second-degree felonious assault with intent to commit bus hijacking and misdemeanor assault, interfering with a police officer and failure to disclose identity.

The accusations are just allegations. All persons arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
