Man dies in shootout with police in Jackson after shooting brother

FRANKLIN TWP. – A shooting involving two brothers Wednesday afternoon in northern Lenawee County led to a chase and gunfire that left one of the men dead and a police officer injured in Jackson County.

Michigan State Police Special Investigations Division detectives from Lansing were called to investigate the shooting in Jackson County, state police said in a statement message on Xformerly Twitter.

The incident began Wednesday around 4:15 p.m., Lenawee County Sheriff Troy Bevier said in a news release. Officers were dispatched to a domestic violence incident between the two brothers in the 500 block of Pentecost Highway, near the Sand Lake boat launch.

According to deputies, Bevier reported, a 34-year-old man and his 31-year-old brother were physically fighting when the 31-year-old pulled a gun and shot the 34-year-old in the hand. The 34-year-old was taken to ProMedica Hickman Hospital in Adrian Township by another family member. His injuries appeared to be minor.

The 31-year-old suspect was located by police in Jackson County, the release was sad. The suspect fled from officers and fired several shots at them. After a lengthy chase, police shot and killed the suspect in Jackson.

The identities of the brothers involved have not been released.

State police said the injured Jackson police officer is expected to survive.

There is no threat to the Lenawee County community and the scene of the original domestic violence incident was investigated by detectives from the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office, the release said.

The Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the original scene by the Michigan State Police Monroe Post.
