Another restaurant chain announces the closure of several establishments

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Hooters announced the closure of “underperforming” locations across the United States, the latest setback for the casual restaurant.

Reports indicate that Hooters has not said how many locations it intends to close. NBC News reports that the network cited pressure from “current economic conditions.”

But Nation’s Restaurant News reports that about 40 restaurants have been closed in places like Texas, Rhode Island, Virginia, Florida and Kentucky. It says Hooters confirmed the closures Monday.

The channel released a statement to NRN saying “this 41-year-old brand remains very resilient and relevant.” The release states that new restaurants are opening in the United States and abroad, and also indicates the launch of new frozen products in grocery stores.

“We look forward to continuing to serve our customers at home, on the go and in our restaurants here in the United States and around the world,” the statement said.

According to USA Today, Hooters had 293 locations at the end of 2023. That’s a 12% decline since the end of 2018, when there were 333 locations, USA Today reports.

Several established restaurant chains, such as Applebee’s, TGI Fridays, Outback Steakhouse and California Pizza Kitchen, have recently announced closures as Americans adjust their eating habits. Red Lobster recently declared bankruptcy.
