Wiley ready for Chiefs | Home

In a few months, Jared Wiley expects to be in line for his NFL debut. But before his professional debut in the Show Me State, the former Temple High School Wildcats quarterback turned tight end will meet fans, friends and family July 2 at Bold Republic Brewing.

The meeting will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. and he will sign free autographs.

Wiley, who played college football at Texas for three years and at TCU for two years, was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs this spring. And despite being on a team that already features superstar tight end Travis Kelce, Wiley and the Chiefs have high hopes for the former hometown player.

“Wiley does a great job in the camps,” Kelce said in a statement. “He has a lot of upside – he’s a smart guy and I would say he’s a lot further along than I was as a rookie in terms of understanding the offense and seeing the court. It’s fun to see it take off.

KC head coach Andy Reid also had high praise for the rookie tight end.

“He came from a passing offense — a few different offenses but good passing offenses,” Reid said in a prepared statement. “He has a good feel for the game and is an important target.”

Wiley, a Temple native, attended Temple High School, playing both tight end and quarterback. In his senior season, he passed for 2,314 yards and 27 touchdowns and only five interceptions.

He played at Texas from 2019-21, then transferred to TCU for his final two seasons. Against Baylor last season, he set a Horned Frog school record with 178 receiving yards. For the season, Wiley had 47 catches for 520 yards and eight touchdowns.

“I wasn’t intimidated at all going to Kansas City,” Wiley said. “Travis Kelce and the others made me feel very welcome. I know exactly what is expected – the coaches have expressed great pleasure that I understood the playbook so quickly.

Wiley said he loves Kansas City, the coaches and the work ethic of his new team.

“I am confident that I will be able to contribute to the team,” he said.

Terri Carter, Temple’s personal trainer, has been friends with Jared and his mother for years.

“His mother and I have been friends for over 30 years,” Carter said. “We raised our children together and remained close throughout our lives. When Jared’s parents divorced, I was also going through a divorce. Jared’s mom, Kim, and I rented a big house together, and Jared, his sister, and my son all lived together.

“We had great memories in this house: spending many summers swimming at the lake, dining together and sharing our lives,” Carter said. “Jared and I still have a close relationship. We visit many things, including football and life in general.

“Jared is very humble and a little introverted,” she said. “He is a hard worker and has overcome many obstacles to get to where he is. It’s a pleasure to be there.

“The meeting is a great way for Jared to say thank you to the community he comes from,” Carter added. “He is good with children and connects very easily with them – he will inspire them to continue to follow their own dreams.”
