Notebook is widely considered one of the greatest love stories ever told – and it’s based on a real-life couple.

Nicholas Sparks’ bestselling 1996 novel, adapted for film in 2004 and for Broadway in 2024, follows the lives of Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling) and Allie Hamilton (Rachel McAdams) as they fall in love, separate and find their way back to each other. Now in their golden years, Allie’s memories are slowly being ripped away from her by Alzheimer’s disease – but Noah is determined to save them, reading their life story to his wife every day in a notebook for help him remember.

According to Sparks, who wrote the novel in six months, the book was inspired by his ex-wife Cathy Sparks’ grandparents, who embarked on a passionate summer romance, only to be separated by her strict parents. Grandmother.

Noah Calhoun and Allie Hamilton are the main characters of Notebook. Portrayed by Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams in the 2004 film, the characters were inspired by Cathy Sparks’ grandparents.

Author Sparks has never revealed the name of his ex-father-in-law to his fans, although a photo of him with his wife was broadcast on CBS News in 2024. Although little is also known about things about Cathy’s grandmother, including her real name and occupation, she was extremely close to her granddaughter. According to Herald TribuneSparks told a crowd in Bradenton, Fla., that his ex-wife’s grandparents met when they were teenagers and embarked on a summer romance.

“As I was trying to figure out what story to write, I got this story but I didn’t know if anyone was going to like it,” Sparks told the audience in 2021. “I thought it was pretty sweet and it was a story that I thought I could write…this story eventually became Notebook.”

As in the novel and film, Cathy’s great-grandparents separated their daughter from her new love at the end of the season. However, just like Noah’s character, Cathy’s grandfather did not give up and continued to write affectionate letters to his grandmother every day.

Although the real Lon’s name and occupation are unknown, Cathy’s grandmother was indeed engaged to another man for a time before meeting Cathy’s grandfather.

“They were separated for years and she got engaged and she came back and they fell in love,” Sparks said. The Wall Street Journal of his muse.

Sparks said. The Wall Street Journal that Noah’s devotion to reading Allie their life story to help bring back her memory was also inspired by his ex-stepfather.

As the author explains, Cathy’s grandfather had his own methods of helping his grandmother, who suffered from dementia, remember their love. “Towards the end of her life she has dementia… and he is with her and shows her… drawings and photographs,” he said. “He didn’t have a notebook, but it was an album that he took her through and told her about their life together.”

His dedication touched Sparks so much that he put the story down on paper. “I just thought there was something really beautiful about this whole concept and so I tried to do it in Notebook.”

The exact length of time Cathy’s grandparents were together is unknown, but they were together for over 60 years.

As the novelist writes on his website, their relationship still seems strong after six decades. “What I remember most… is the way they treated each other,” he wrote of the couple after a particularly sweet visit. “The way his eyes sparkled when he looked at her, the way he held her hand, the way he made her tea and took care of her. I remember watching them together and thinking that after sixty years of marriage, these two people treated each other exactly the same way my wife and I treated each other after twelve hours (of marriage).

Sparks revealed on Sunday morning that Cathy’s grandparents were struggling to ensure their well-being in the twilight years of their lives. “They lived long and happy lives, and then in their later years, age started to take its toll,” he said.

In addition to the dementia that Cathy’s grandmother suffered from, the writer noted on her website that she and her husband were under doctor’s orders not to attend Cathy and Sparks’ nuptials in 1989 due to of “poor health”.

With a little ingenuity, they were still able to enjoy the couple’s celebration. According to Sparks, he and Cathy dressed up in their wedding ensembles the morning after exchanging vows and went to see the older couple with flowers, a video of the event and a piece of wedding cake in tow. “They didn’t know we were coming and were excited to see us,” he wrote. “My father-in-law put on his jacket and buttoned up and we took pictures with them.”

According to the author, their day together sowed the first seeds of his now iconic novel. He wrote: “That’s when they told us how they met and fell in love, parts of which ended up ending up in Notebook.”
