DHS announces first members of its AI Corps

The Department of Homeland Security announced the first members of its AI Corps, a group of technology experts hired as part of an agency recruiting sprint.

The first 10 members come from backgrounds specializing in artificial intelligence, product management, cybersecurity, analytics and software engineering, according to the announcement by DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Director of the AI, Eric Hysen.

AI Corps members include alumni from Google, the US Digital Service, the US Naval Observatory, PricewaterhouseCoopers, the National Center for Education Statistics, and the Office of the Secretary of Defense, among other public and sector organizations. private.

“Our department is at the forefront of the federal government in harnessing the potential of AI to accomplish its mission,” Mayorkas said in a statement. “To strengthen our leadership, we are recruiting AI talent across the country, attracting qualified professionals to public service. »

Earlier this year, DHS announced that Michael Boyce would serve as director of the AI ​​Corps. The agency hopes to eventually hire 50 people under the initiative, and the White House has previously said it wants to hire 500 AI experts across the federal government.

The news comes as the federal government hopes to boost the recruitment of AI-focused workers, a goal boosted by the president’s executive order on the technology last year.
