New Haven supervisor arrested for assault caught on video

NEW HAVEN — A New Haven emergency dispatch center supervisor turned himself in to police Friday after video surfaced showing him slapping a man outside a shopping center.

Justin Augustine, who supervises civilian firefighters and police dispatchers at the city’s public safety response point, faces charges of third-degree assault, second-degree threatening and violating the order public in the second degree.

Police responded to a private residence at 12:06 a.m. June 14 for a reported assault that occurred a few hours earlier at another location.

Officers obtained video footage showing a man slapping another man sitting on the ground outside a store at a Whalley Avenue shopping center.

The video clip, widely distributed on social networks, made it possible to identify Augustine as the alleged attacker.

Augustine surrendered to authorities on June 21 after an arrest warrant was issued.

He was released on a court-set $2,500 bond.

The charges against Augustine are accusations and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
