Coach calls reporter selfish and unfair for suggesting he would leave Texas A&M; The profits will leave for Texas the next day

The Texas A&M Aggies were 7 outs away from sitting atop College Baseball and winning the College World Series. After a 9-5 victory in Game 1, the Aggies found themselves up 1-0 in the top of the 7th inning of Game 2. But a 2-out rally by Tennessee gave them a 2-1 lead in the match they were going to play. to win 4-1, tying the series 1-1. Game 3 was as dramatic as anyone could have hoped, with the Aggies making a late run to cut the deficit to one point in the 9th only to falter and watch the Vols storm the field.

But the real heartbreak and anger for Aggie fans came about 24 hours after the loss when manager Jim Schlossnagle made a decision that turned the college baseball world upside down. Shortly after the Game 3 loss to Tennessee, Schlossnagle chastised a reporter for asking a question that many wanted to know his opinion on the head coaching opening at the University of Texas. Knowing now what decision Schlossnagle made after that, his response speaks volumes about Texas’ choice of new coach.

Reporter: “Coach, regarding tonight’s tough outcome, but with the rumors circulating today regarding a specific job offer (University of Texas), what do you have to say about your future at Aggieland?

Schlossnagle: “Yeah, I mean…I think it’s pretty selfish of you to ask me that question to be honest with you, but I left my family to become a coach at Texas A&M. I took the job at Texas A&M only to never take another job again. And that hasn’t changed in my mind, and it’s unfair to talk about something like that. It would be like asking Montgomery if he’s going to sign in the draft. I understand you have to ask, but I gave up a huge part of my life to come take this job, and I poured every ounce of my soul into this job, and I gave this job my all. that I could. maybe, give it… then write that.

This was tweeted on June 24 at 10:16 p.m. On June 25 at 5:30 p.m., the Houston Chronicle reported that Schlossnagle had accepted the job at Texas as their new head coach. A real turnaround from a guy who was so adamant about his time with the Aggies that he belittled a reporter for even considering the issue.

Many are now curious as to how Schlossnagle’s recruiting visits will go, as there will likely be at least one player who wants to know if Schlossnagle’s word holds any weight after this turn of events. Schlossnagle joins Texas AD Chris Del Conte, who was AD at TCU when Schlossnagle coached there.

“I’ve known Coach Schlossnagle for a long time, and there is no better coach, program builder and leader in the game, and the best part is he is an even better person,” Del said Conte in a press release. “When we were searching for our next baseball coach, we knew Schloss would be the perfect choice, and we are thrilled to have him join our Longhorn family. This is a guy who obviously knows our state very well, is very familiar with the rich and proud history of our program and everything that Texas Baseball is, and absolutely checks all the boxes for this critical position. He truly understands every level of building a team, develops and gets the best out of his players and coaches, recruits with the best of them, and is totally involved in the holistic growth of the student-athletes in his program . Our players, staff, UT community and Longhorn Nation will absolutely love it. I can’t wait to get it going and for everyone to have a chance to meet it. The future of our program is in good hands and I am very excited to have Coach Schloss join our elite coaching group as we prepare to head to the Southeastern Conference.

With Texas joining the SEC, the two rival schools will see a lot of each other in 2025. It will be interesting to see how the Aggies welcome Schlossnagle back to College Station.
