Woman randomly beaten with bat in terrifying attack caught on camera in Lower Manhattan

A woman who was beaten with a bat in a disturbing attack caught on video is recovering after two men randomly attacked her on a Lower Manhattan street.

Shi Yanan, 58, was looking at her phone while walking on Monroe Street near Market Street around 2 p.m. Tuesday, according to surveillance video.

The men crept up behind her and the one not carrying a baseball bat hit her in the back of the head, the video shows.

As Yanan raised her hand to her head and turned around, the men pushed her against the doorframe and inexplicably began hitting, kicking, and hitting her with a bat.

The woman crouched on the ground, her belongings strewn across the sidewalk, as she took a few moments to recover from the terrifying and random attack.

A passerby holding a shopping bag and pushing a scooter appears to have stopped to check on Yanan as she made a phone call.

The attackers did not steal anything from him, police said.

Doctors took Yanan to SUNY Downstate Medical Center, where she was treated and released.

Her family told the Daily News on Wednesday that the woman suffered bruising to her leg and head and was recovering at her Staten Island home.

“Fortunately, the screams of bystanders and the courageous intervention of community members frightened the attacker and prompted him to call for help in a timely manner, thus avoiding potentially more serious consequences,” said one member. of the family in a press release.

“This incident not only caused physical damage, but also serious psychological trauma”

The police have not yet arrested the attackers.

“Targeting the elderly, women and children is truly reprehensible,” the family said. “We urge the police to make full use of the available evidence to quickly bring the criminal to justice. »
