High school basketball starts at C-Port Madness

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – Before all the area basketball teams started competing against each other in games that matter, some of them took the court Wednesday night during the kickoff of the C-Port Madness season. The annual event brings together many schools from across Savannah – both boys and girls teams – to compete in various skills competitions.

“It shows how united Savannah is, and it’s good to see everyone there – a good introduction to the season, a good way to get everyone started and excited for the season ahead,” said Savannah High- head coach George Brown. “There should be a lot of good basketball in Savannah this year, and we’re looking forward to it.”

“The children grew up together. They go to different schools now, but when they see each other it’s like one big family celebration,” said Johnson High head coach Chuck Campbell.

The evening concluded with the main event – the dunk contest – with Woodville-Tompkins’ Jonathon Pickering taking home the trophy, edging out Johnson’s Favion Kirkwood.

The regular season is just around the corner. Friday is the first day teams can start playing.
