Neville’s only Amorim concern is dismissed by Moyes as Wright praises ‘brilliant’ INEOS decision

Neville’s only Amorim concern is dismissed by Moyes as Wright praises ‘brilliant’ INEOS decision

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has admitted he has concerns about new head coach Ruben Amorim but this has been dismissed by David Moyes.

Man Utd Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his recruitment team have appointed Amorim as a replacement for Erik ten Hag, who was sacked following the disappointing 2-1 defeat at West Ham.

Amorim was targeted by Liverpool and West Ham in the summer, but he remained at Sporting Lisbon after the two Premier League clubs went in different directions.

The 39-year-old has done a fantastic job at Sporting Lisbon since arriving in 2020. He has helped them win the Primeira Liga twice and they have won their first ten league matches this season.

Rio Ferdinand became overly giddy about his arrival after Amorim’s Sporting Lisbon came from behind to beat Manchester City 4-1 on Tuesday evening.

Nevertheless, Marcel is concerned about Amorim’s preferred 3-4-3 formation.

“You’re always optimistic about the arrival of a new manager,” Neville said during the latest episode of The Overlap.

“I understand why he (Rúben Amorim) wanted the job next summer, because he preferred the preseason to implement the brand new system. Those players haven’t played three at the back at all, some of them may have never played it.”

However, former Man Utd manager David Moyes does not think the players will “take too long” to adapt to Amorim.

“Players are more flexible these days. Players from your era (against Gary Neville) might have needed a little more time. Players are used to it now,” Moyes added.

“(Manchester) United have enough centre-backs and more wing-backs. I don’t think the adjustment will take too long for Manchester United.

“It may take a while to get to the point he (Rúben Amorim) wants, but I think things will be fine for Manchester United.”

Meanwhile, ponders Arsenal legend Ian Wright INEOS made a “brilliant” move when they gave Amorim an ultimatum.

“For him (Rúben Amorim) to come in at this stage, where they said he comes now or it’s off the table – that’s brilliant from them (Manchester United),” claimed Wright.

“It’s the first time I’ve actually seen them do something with such intensity. Nobody expected anything from (Manchester) United this season.

“If he wants them from now until the end of the season, rather than at the end of the season – like he said he wanted to get to the summer and then bring people in, he can see exactly what he has on a daily basic.

“Now that you see what he did with Manchester City last night, you don’t know what he is capable of.”
