FBI announces reward linked to 2021 killing of young National Guardsman

The FBI’s Chicago office announced a $10,000 reward Thursday for information leading to the arrest of Joseph “Troubles” Matos, an alleged gang member accused of the 2021 drive-by murder of a National Guard member.

An indictment unsealed earlier this month accuses Matos and another man, Gary “Gotti” Roberson, of murder as part of a racketeering conspiracy. Roberson, 40, of Chicago, was arrested May 16 and is being held without bail.

The two men are believed to be members of the Milwaukee Kings street gang, which is associated with drug trafficking and committing acts of violence to acquire perceived territory, according to an FBI statement. If convicted, Matos and Roberson face the death penalty.

On July 3, 2021, Chrys Carvajal, 19, of Portage Park, was fatally shot in the back and abdomen in the 2200 block of North Lockwood Avenue in the Belmont-Cragin neighborhood. He was on leave from basic military training and leaving a house party when he was killed, according to his family.

An arrest warrant was issued for Matos on May 14. Two days later, the FBI raided a home where he was believed to be staying, in the 2200 block of West Farragut Avenue in Lincoln Square. He was not found there and remains a fugitive.

Matos should be considered armed and dangerous, and members of the public should not approach him directly, the FBI said.
