Samsung is expected to unveil an Ultra model in the Watch 7 series during the Galaxy Unpacked event on July 10. While previous reports have previewed the specs of Samsung’s expected rugged smartwatch, a report from 9To5Google suggests that the Ultra model will get an Apple Watch-style strap placement mechanism for swapping watch bands.

According to the report, the Galaxy Watch Ultra will feature a wristband connection mechanism similar to that of the Apple Watch. Samsung has traditionally used a spring mechanism on its previous generation smartwatches to connect the watch bands to the watch face, however, the report suggests that the Watch 7 series Ultra model will feature a new mechanism with buttons on the watch face. underneath, which, when pressed, will allow the watch strap to slide.

If true, the Galaxy Watch Ultra, which features a new band connector mechanism, will not allow users to switch bands that are compatible with the current generation of Galaxy Watches. However, the report indicates that the upcoming Galaxy Watch 7 will feature the traditional spring mechanism, making customization easier for those switching from an older generation of Galaxy Watches.

Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra: what to expect

The Galaxy Watch Ultra is expected to feature a titanium chassis and a square-shaped dial. The square frame would likely incorporate a circular display with a sapphire crystal cover. The smartwatch is expected to come in a dark gray color with orange elements along the frame. The watch would also likely feature an orange-colored rotating crown on the side of the frame, alongside two buttons.

The Ultra model is expected to benefit from new microLED display technology for increased brightness compared to OLED screens. Some reports suggest that the watch could reach 3,000 nits. The Galaxy Watch Ultra is expected to be powered by the new Exynos W940 chipset which is expected to debut with the Galaxy Watch 7 series.

Samsung would likely market the Galaxy Watch Ultra as an adventure watch. This would likely be supported by its battery capacity and durability features. According to reports, the Ultra model is expected to offer up to 100 hours of battery life on a single charge. For added durability, the Galaxy Watch Ultra could benefit from MIL-STD-810H certification for military-standard durability. Additionally, an IP68 water and dust resistance rating is expected.
