Former Homes Under The Hammer and Ground Force star Tommy Walsh has revealed to fans that he is undergoing cutting-edge cancer treatment in a bid to beat the disease once and for all.

The 67-year-old is undergoing radiotherapy on the NHS which identifies cancer cells. He said: “My cancer came back earlier this year… they found it under my lung. So I needed this new treatment called SABR and it’s radiotherapy that targets it in a specific spot without damaging the organs around it. So they used that and it shrank. It doesn’t. It goes away. Because it’s shrinking, it’ll just shrink down and disappear. Then I’ll just have annual check-ups. It’s worked really well for me.”

The cancer was discovered just outside his lung and Tommy said the discovery made him feel lucky. He added: “They thought it was in the lung and I would have been in trouble. The operation would have been serious: they would have opened the lung and removed a large piece of bone from the rib, then they would have had to put a piece of wire mesh to prevent the lung from falling out of the hole. So I didn’t want to, but we had this as a backup. The SABR treatment worked and I’m healthy so I haven’t had any pain. »

TV presenter Tommy also praised the NHS for the way it treated his cancer. He said: “I was treated on the NHS. That’s where I’m going. They fixed the problem and it’s great. I always went to the NHS. They took care of me throughout these cancer shenanigans, so why would I want to go anywhere else.

Tommy has helped transform hundreds of gardens and properties for lucky homeowners during his two-decade career, and although he’s now the face of Homes Under The Hammer, it’s another iconic makeover show that made his name. Ground Force, first broadcast in 1997, saw TV presenter Tommy, alongside fellow presenters, famous gardener Alan Titchmarsh and green-fingered maestro Charlie Dimmock, create dreamscapes. Although the trio became best friends while filming the family gardening show, there were times behind the scenes when they didn’t quite see eye to eye. Alan once lost his rag with Tommy due to sawdust – but they literally kissed and made up after the “hairy” encounter.

“When we started filming, we were polite to each other for the first two seasons, but by season three, we were like family,” Charlie told Hello! magazine in June 2021. “My main memory of Ground Force caused a lot of laughter. It was the same team week after week, as well as the same production and the same team. You know what it’s like to work with a team and get along.

In 2000, during a heated argument, the usually polite Alan allegedly lost his temper with Tommy while planting flower beds in a garden in Pitsea, Essex, after the DIY expert accidentally covered the floor with sawdust while sawing wood. In an interview with the Radio Times, Tommy revealed: “Call me picky if you want, but I like my Ground Force gardens to look immaculate when finished. I don’t feel any emotion seeing them covered in dandruff. »

Although the two men managed to put the incident aside, Tommy admits it created some tension. Recalling the aftermath of their argument, Tommy continued: “For a while it got a little tense. But when we both calmed down, we kissed (yes) and made up. What pissed me off was that I was working really hard to get everything ready and Alan was complaining about some misplaced sawdust. »
