Bauhaus-Inspired Mansion Listed at $3.7 Million in Montclair NJ

Bauhaus-Inspired Mansion Listed at .7 Million in Montclair NJ

Nestled among the grand and historic homes that line South Mountain Avenue in Montclair is a modern mansion with clean lines and seamless functionality that stands out from the rest.

On the market for $3.7 million, the home at 251 South Mountain Ave. was created by AIA architect Barry Jay Kaplan and designed by Satomi Yoshida-Katz of Yoshida+Zanon Design Atrium. The home’s style is inspired by Bauhaus, a German design style that uses geometric shapes and industrial materials and prioritizes functionality, accessibility and the flow of the home.

“The previous owner of the house had bought this lot and basically tore down the little house that was there and decided to build this Bauhaus-style house that’s super modern,” said real estate agent Ana Simon of Brown Harris Stevens. “It’s perfect for someone who’s hoping to live in an established neighborhood and wants the look of something new. That’s what makes it even more special.”

Built in 2017, this five-bedroom, six-bathroom home offers 5,696 square feet of living space on 0.43 acres of land. On the first floor, you’ll find a living room with floor-to-ceiling windows and a fireplace, a kitchen with state-of-the-art appliances, a bedroom, and a laundry room. There are four en suite bedrooms and a family room with a gas fireplace on the second floor, a walk-out basement with 11-foot ceilings, and a heated three-car garage.

Simon said the home was also built with smart home technology, so almost everything can be controlled via an app, including opening the blinds and unlocking the doors. And while the home doesn’t have a view of New York City, she said there are panoramic views of the treetops visible from most rooms, making the Montclair home “feel like a treehouse.”

“The architect designed this house especially for his daughter. So he made sure to use the best materials and bring in an exceptional interior designer,” she said. “The choice and layout of this house were the subject of real thought and particular care. »

Another highlight of the property is the fact that it has been used as an advertising campaign set for several high-end brands, Simon said. Among those filming in the house are Eli Tahari, H&M, Kith, What Goes Around Comes Around – a vintage Chanel second-hand store in New York – and Brooke Shields for True Botanicals skincare, to name a few just a few.

“The current owner is passionate about fashion, so she has offered her home to high-end luxury brands for their advertising on different sites because the house has stunning views and very long, high windows,” she said. “It’s kind of a blank canvas for any style of photoshoot or campaign.”

Location-wise, the property is minutes from Nishuane Park and Eagle Rock Preserve. The home is also about a mile from Bloomfield Avenue and downtown Montclair, and is close to West Orange.

“Montclair is really the most popular suburb that attracts a lot of people from Brooklyn and Manhattan. It’s kind of the next destination for people who want a little more peace and quiet, but still want to enjoy the urban lifestyle,” Simon said. “You really find a little bit of everything there. »
