Valerie’s House and NACG ‘Flip the Script’ about childhood grief

Valerie’s House and NACG ‘Flip the Script’ about childhood grief

In November, in honor of Children’s Grief Awareness Month, Valerie’s home Pensacolain collaboration with the National Alliance for Children’s Griefis committed to supporting children coping with loss.

Through the Flip the Script campaign, both organizations want to change the way people understand and approach childhood grief. The campaign encourages everyone – families, communities and professionals – to go beyond common expressions of sadness and offer real support through presence, active listening and action.

The campaign, launched by the NACG with support from organizations such as Dougy Center, Eluna, Experience Camps and Judi’s House, seeks to replace hurtful or dismissive statements with meaningful actions. Children who have experienced grief emphasize the healing power of simply being present, actively listening, and respecting each person’s unique journey.

There are many ways families and organizations can support Valerie’s House this November:

  • Refer families in need – Those who know children experiencing loss are encouraged to connect them with Valerie’s House.
  • Attend ‘Cocktails for a Cause’ – On November 21, Valerie’s House Pensacola will host a fundraiser with cocktail and food tastings, music and a contribution to the Cardinal Caring Tree. Proceeds go directly to funeral services for local children.
  • Sponsor monthly dinners – As part of their family evenings, Valerie’s House regularly hosts group dinners. Community members and businesses can help by covering the costs of these meetings or organizing fundraisers.
  • Living ‘Michael Jackson – An exciting tribute” at the Saenger Theater on November 23. Proceeds from the evening of entertainment will benefit Valerie’s House of Pensacola.

West Florida humanists organize the annual Shoe Distribution Drive

The Humanists of West Florida are hosting their seventh annual Shoe Distribution Drive now through Monday, November 11.

In honor of Homelessness Awareness Month in November 2023, HWF hosted the first major distribution of 144 ponchos concurrently with their annual Shoe Distribution Drive, which takes place after their shoe and sock drive since 2018. They partnered with Ever’man Cooperative Grocery and Cafe, Open Books Prison Ministry and Roger Scott Tennis Center to make the event a success.

The distribution served customers of the Alfred-Washburn Center, the largest full-service safe haven for the homeless in Pensacola. The second major distribution of 144 ponchos took place in May 2024 and was again distributed to Alfred-Washburn Center customers after they learned that the original ponchos lasted just six months due to harsh weather conditions.

Now in their sixth year of distributing needed resources to unhoused individuals, HWF has expanded their promotions to include writing articles for local newspapers, airing advertisements on WUWF public radio, displaying posters in strategic locations in Pensacola and direct calls to their more than 300 Facebook accounts. members and friends.
