SpiceJet and IndiGo, the two flight operators operating from Terminal 1 (T1) of the Indira Gandhi International Airport, said all flight operations have been shifted to Terminals 2 and 3 and given new slots following the collapse of the T1 departure forecourt canopy following heavy rains on Friday.

Airline operators said they had informed passengers of the details via text messages and emails. In Friday’s incident, one person was killed and eight others injured, forcing the closure of T1 and requiring alternative flight arrangements.

“DIAL’s cross-functional teams are actively assessing the situation and engaging with various stakeholders to ensure the safety and comfort of passengers. As the evaluation process is still ongoing, it is too early to provide specific elements for the requests. We remain committed to maintaining flight operations in Q3 and T2, while operations in Q1 are temporarily suspended. We appreciate the understanding and support of all stakeholders,” a spokesperson for airport operator Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) told HT.

Both airlines said that while flight schedules were being brought forward or postponed, depending on the availability of slots, no flights were cancelled on Sunday and adequate arrangements had been made to accommodate the increased footfall. DIAL said it was working with the airlines and other stakeholders to facilitate the transition.

DIAL did not give a timeline on when operations at T1 were likely to resume, as they were still being evaluated. On Friday, following the incident, it formed a technical committee to examine the reasons for the collapse.

T1, before its closure, was handling up to 200 flight movements per day. Following Friday’s incident, all SpiceJet arrivals and departures have been shifted to T3, while IndiGo’s T1 flights have been allocated slots at T2 and T3.

“There were no cancellations and although some flights were delayed on Sunday, it was not because of the roof collapse of T1. Flights have been adjusted and new slots have been provided at these two terminals,” said an airport official.

In a statement, SpiceJet said, “All SpiceJet flights to or from Delhi from July 1 to 7 will operate from Terminal 3 of Delhi Airport. Necessary information has been communicated to all passengers on their registered contact details (SMS/email). Passengers are requested to allow sufficient travel time and to regularly monitor the status of their flight. »

IndiGo also said it was sharing details of the new terminals, as well as a possible change in flight numbers. “We are constantly working to keep passengers informed of the flight movement of Terminals 2 and 3, due to the closure of Terminal 1,” IndiGo said in a statement.

An IndiGo spokesperson said no flights were cancelled due to Sunday’s change.

T1, at present, can accommodate 20 million passengers, T2 can accommodate 15 million passengers and T3, up to 40 million passengers.
