Man who admitted dumping his girlfriend’s body on US-131 will be sentenced today

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The man who confessed to killing his girlfriend and dumping her body on a busy highway will be sentenced today.

Brandon Ortiz-Vite is scheduled for a sentencing hearing Thursday afternoon. He admitted to shooting Ruby Garcia and leaving her body on the side of US-131.

Garcias body was found late at night on March 22. Investigators later determined that Ortiz had shot Vite García several times while the two were in the car together. Ortiz-Vite then dumped her body on the side of US-131 near Leonard Avenue, shoot her again before driving away, police say.

Two days later, Ortiz-Vite called 911 surrender to the police.

The case then received national attention Legal status of Ortiz-Vite came to light. He was deported to Mexico in 2020 but returned to the US illegally

Ortiz-Vite pleaded to the charges of second-degree murder, carjacking, illegal carrying of a concealed weapon and use of a firearm in the commission of a crime in September and is back in court Thursday.

The Public Prosecution Service has recommended a prison sentence of 32 to 39 years.
