Crews work through night to stop spread of scrap metal fire

Firefighters spent the night battling a blaze involving 3,000 tonnes of scrap metal.

The fire broke out in a yard on Greenway Lane in Buriton, near Petersfield, at around 12:30 BST on Monday.

Crews worked overnight using machinery on site to separate metal to create fire breaks and limit the spread of the fire.

The roads surrounding the village remain closed and the population is asked to avoid the area.

At the height of the blaze, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said 40 firefighters from six stations were sent to the scene, which sent plumes of thick black smoke into the air.

South Western Railway has temporarily stopped trains between Petersfield and Havant.

The line was reopened in the mid-afternoon, with services expected to run at reduced speed.
