Man arrested and charged with sexual abuse of minor in Columbia

A Columbia man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor.

The Columbia Police Department (CPD) was dispatched to a home to investigate a report of sexual assault around 4:48 p.m.

Police were told at the scene that Kenny Trey Newland, 26, of Columbia, was a friend of some of the home’s residents and was staying with them. CPD noted that a minor who also lived at the residence was the reporting victim.

They claimed Newland entered their bedroom on November 5 and closed the door behind him.

Court documents show the man then sexually assaulted the victim, despite their verbal and physical attempts to get him to stop.

Officers detained Newland for questioning in a post-Miranda interview, during which he claimed the victim requested the act.

Newland allegedly stated that he knew the victim was a minor and that it was wrong. That’s why it only lasted a moment, according to a probable cause statement.

He was taken into custody by CPD and charged with first-degree rape and first-degree sodomy.

Newland was booked into the Boone County Jail without bond.
