Higgins Announces .2 Million for St. Mary Parish Flood Mitigation, Total Recovery Funding Now Surpasses .5 Billion

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Clay Higgins (R-LA) today announced that FEMA is providing $1,223,795.00 for flood mitigation efforts in St. Mary Parish.

Hazard mitigation funding is made available through the Hurricane Delta Major Disaster Declaration (DR-4570-LA), which MP Higgins supported.

Risk mitigation grants include:

  • $1,165,525.00 to St. Mary Parish for the elevation of two existing residential structures that have suffered repeated flood damage. The grant is 100% federally funded and authorized under Section 404 of the Robert T. Stafford Act.
  • $58,270.00 will be provided to the Parish of Sainte-Marie for management costs associated with the high-altitude sites. The grant is 100% federally funded and authorized under Section 324 of the Robert T. Stafford Act.

Much of the official work of Congress to advance recovery projects is happening behind the scenes. The finalization of funding and the associated official funding announcement are the result of ongoing efforts over several months with FEMA and state and local stakeholders. All funds will be disbursed to the State of Louisiana. The State is responsible for distributing the funds to each subrecipient.

MP Higgins made the following statement:

“South Louisiana is full of resilient and strong communities. We don’t let storms destroy our spirit. To date, our office has provided more than $4.5 billion in recovery assistance. We will continue to prioritize mitigation efforts before disasters like this one and work with our local, state and federal partners to ensure continued economic growth and prosperity.”
