With veterans in mind this July 4th, fireworks can often trigger post-traumatic stress disorder

COLORADO SPRINGS — Fireworks and Fourth of July celebrations can be challenging for veterans, especially those suffering from PTSD and other illnesses.

Loud bangs and noises can trigger memories of combat.

Behavioral therapists at the Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center say many veterans find it difficult to enjoy fireworks.

It is said that if you have a family member who is a veteran, it is important to have a plan to help them if they are around fireworks so that they feel more relaxed and do not feel threatened.

“Something to help your mind and body realize that I’m not threatened, I’m safe, and if I find myself in this high place, a quick release and return to stasis,” said Kirsten Belaire, director of behavioral health at Mt. Carmel.

Belaire also recommends thinking about other ways to celebrate the Fourth of July with veterans instead of watching fireworks, because for most of the year, veterans aren’t exposed to them and aren’t prepared for them.
