Two officers were killed while investigating an accident

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) – Two police officers were hit while doing their job.

UPDATE:

The suspect was arrested on Wednesday. According to the Colorado State Patrol, Stephen Geer was charged with the following:

  • Vehicular homicide – While driving under the influence of alcohol or one or more drugs or both. Such behavior was the direct cause of the death of another person
  • Two counts of vehicular assault – While driving under the influence of alcohol or one or more drugs or both. Such conduct was the proximate cause of serious bodily harm to another person,
  • Failure to exercise due care when approaching a stationary vehicle, resulting in death (felony, moving law),
  • Driving a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, drugs or both.

Colorado State Patrol said the officers were struck by an oncoming vehicle while investigating a crash scene.

Officers responded to a property damage accident in Golden on Wednesday afternoon. “There was one officer in a police car in front of the scene of the accident and two additional officers were in charge of the scene when a passing vehicle arrived on the scene. Both officers at the original crash site were struck and forced under the original crashed vehicle,” the CSP said in a news release.

One of the officers died on the spot, the other was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The driver who hit the officers has been arrested for suspected damage.

“Our thoughts are with the members of the Golden Police Department and the friends and families of the officers involved,” the CSP said.
