Accused arrested for smuggling phones into Bengaluru Central Jail via rectal route

Officials at Parappana Agrahara Central Jail in Bengaluru have arrested a 25-year-old man from judicial remand who allegedly tried to smuggle two mobile phones concealed in his rectum on July 2.

This incident has not only highlighted the use of mobile phones in the high-security Parappana Agrahara Central Jail but also the lapses in the police escort. The use of mobile phones continues unabated despite the fact that the central jail is equipped with state-of-the-art jammers, which even cause inconvenience to the residents living in and around it.

The accused, Raghuveer, was taken to court for a hearing. After the hearing, he was brought back and handed over to the jail authorities.

During routine formalities, Raghuveer complained of stomach ache to the inspection team, led by probationary sub-inspector Divyashri G.

Suspecting something fishy, ​​officers examined him with a handheld metal detector, which beeped when brought close to the body cavity.

The matter was reported to higher authorities. Raghuveer was subjected to a medical examination. Two mobile phones, wrapped in adhesive tape, were found in his anus.

Central Jail Superintendent Mallikarjun B. lodged a complaint with the Parappana Agrahara police and launched an investigation to find out how Raghuveer managed to get his hands on the mobile phones while in custody. The police suspect that Raghuveer smuggled the mobile phones at the behest of someone in the jail.

The police have registered an FIR charging Raghuveer under section 42 of the Karnataka Prisons (Amendment) Act (punishment for bringing or removing prohibited articles into or out of prison and communicating with prisoners) and section 323 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (dishonestly or fraudulently removing or concealing property).
