Former school leader convicted in assault case

GIRARD, OH (WKBN) – The former dean of students at Youngstown City Schools has now been sentenced in a case in which he was caught on video slamming a teenage girl into a car.

A month later a mistrial was declared in the caseChivas Whipple pleaded guilty to an amended charge of assault and criminal damage.

Prosecutors said in February: Whipple knowingly harmed the girl and damaged the vehicle.

“I plead for justice to be done,” the girl’s mother asked the court. “This has been an increasingly painful process that has taken eight months.”

Whipple’s attorneys asked for community control.

Before he was sentenced, Whipple apologized to the victim, his immediate family and the city of Youngstown.

“It’s a sad set of circumstances that we’re here for,” Judge Jeffrey Adler said.

“I watched the tape,” Adler said. “All I can say is that behavior is despicable.”

Whipple was sentenced to a suspended sentence of 180 days in the Trumbull County Jail, three years’ probation, 90 days of electronically monitored home detention and a $1,000 fine.
