Echo Director Talks That Supernatural Opening Scene and How the Choctaw Nation Inspired It | Entertainment

Marvel’s Echo is finally here! The series starring Maya Lopez, played by Alaqua Cox, is not only the MCU’s first binge-watching series, but also the first to have an adult rating. While Echo was widely touted as taking place in a darker neighborhood down the street, the latest Marvel TV series opened on a rather supernatural front. When CinemaBlend spoke to Echo director and producer Sydney Freeland, she explained why she chose to open the series the way she did. Echo opens with a group of natives emerging from magical pools. One woman decides to drink the water from one of the pools, causing a bird to appear in front of her and then fly away. Suddenly, the group’s house begins to shake furiously before they are transported to a new location, filled with greenery and the gaze of the sun. Their clay forms begin to melt away to reveal their human forms. The three-minute sequence leads into the origin story of young Maya. What was it about?
