Drunk driver in rental truck arrested for speeding at Vancouver Island construction site

Campbell River Highway Patrol in British Columbia impounded a rental truck for impaired driving and speeding in a construction zone last week.

On Wednesday, June 26, shortly after 9:30 a.m., police were conducting a speed check in a construction zone on Highway 19 near Comox Valley Parkway in Courtenay.

The construction site was in full swing, with work crews and equipment operating in the area at the time.

Police clocked the truck driving at 106 km/h in the 60 km/h zone, nearly double the posted speed limit.

They then stopped the truck and found that the driver was under the influence of alcohol.

“The construction workers on the road were put in danger because of the impaired driver,” said Staff Sergeant Tallboy, acting officer in charge of BCHP Vancouver Island.

“If you plan to consume alcohol or drugs this summer, plan a safe commute and keep workers safe on the side of the road by slowing down in construction zones.”

The driver was given a $368 speeding ticket and banned from driving for 90 days for impaired driving.

The rental vehicle was impounded for 30 days.
