Boston police arrest man, recover automatic firearm after traffic stop

BOSTON — A traffic stop in Roslindale led to the arrest of a local man and the recovery of a fully automatic firearm by members of the Boston Police Department’s Youth Violence Strike Force Thursday afternoon.

At around 1:30 p.m., police officers were patrolling Washington Street when they spotted a vehicle driving at high speed with no license plate on the front, but instead displayed on the dashboard.

During the traffic stop near 90 Brookway Terrace, the driver, identified as Adrian Fernandes, 24, of Roslindale, appeared nervous and attempted to flee after a brief struggle with police.

Officers observed Fernandes with visibly shaking hands and, while attempting to obtain his license and registration, he attempted to close the vehicle door and restart the engine.

A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a Glock 27 equipped with a machine gun selector and eight rounds in the magazine.

After resisting arrest and fleeing the scene, Fernandes was apprehended on the roof of 105 Brookway Road.

He now faces charges including unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, unlawful possession of a large capacity feeding device, unlawful possession of a sawed-off machine gun and resisting arrest.

Fernandes is expected to be arraigned in West Roxbury District Court.
