Amazing footage captured in Istanbul shows mysterious meteor with long tail throw across the night sky.

The spectators could not take their eyes off this unique spectacle, stunned.

As the meteor moves toward the other side of the sky, its tail begins to flicker before eventually disappearing from view.

The sky turns inky black again as spectators stare at each other in disbelief.

Although the images were taken in Istanbul, the magnificent spectacle was visible in other Turkish cities such as Bursa, Sakarya, Kocaeli and Çorum.

At first, viewers speculated about what it might actually be.

Some spectators thought they saw a rocket and others thought they saw a satellite crashing to Earth.

The Turkish Space Agency (TUA) took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to settle the debate and confirm the meteor sighting.

They also explained why its color was so bright.

TUA said: “The colours are formed when meteors enter the atmosphere and vary depending on several factors, such as the chemical composition of the meteor, its speed and the gases present in the Earth’s atmosphere.

“Different elements found in the meteor can create different colors as they burn up in Earth’s atmosphere.

“For example, sodium can create a bright yellow-orange color, magnesium can create green or blue tones, and ionized calcium (Ca+) can create a purple color.

“Larger meteorites can release more energy upon entry, creating more intense colors.

“Overall, these factors cause a variety of colors to appear, making each meteorite event a unique and visually impressive natural phenomenon.”

It comes after last month’s brief scare when two asteroids zoomed past – one of them larger than 99% of near-Earth asteroids.

The larger of the two was about 2km long and would have been closest to Earth at 21:14 BST / 16:14 ET on June 27.

“The orbit of this asteroid around the Sun is highly inclined, which is unusual for such a large object,” explained the European Space Agency (ESA).

What is the difference between an asteroid, a meteor and a comet?

  • Asteroid: An asteroid is a small rocky body that orbits the Sun. Most are found in the asteroid belt (between Mars and Jupiter), but they can be found anywhere (including on a trajectory that could impact Earth).
  • Meteoroid: When two asteroids collide, the small pieces that break off are called meteoroids.
  • Meteor: If a meteoroid enters the Earth’s atmosphere, it begins to vaporize and becomes a meteor. On Earth, it will look like a streak of light in the sky, as the rock burns.
  • Meteorite: If a meteoroid does not completely vaporize and survives its journey through Earth’s atmosphere, it may land on Earth. It then becomes a meteorite.
  • Comet: Like asteroids, a comet orbits the Sun. However, rather than being mostly rock, a comet contains a lot of ice and gas, which can cause amazing tails to form behind it (thanks to the vaporization of ice and dust).
