Washington Commanders’ cornerback room ranked at bottom of NFL ladder

Washington Commanders’ cornerback room ranked at bottom of NFL ladder

The Washington Commanders changed everything this offseason. With new ownership, the team now has a new general manager, a new coaching staff, and even a new roster.

It’s impossible to go from a four-win team to a Super Bowl contender in one offseason (though the Houston Texans came pretty close with their seven-win surge last season). The Commanders still have a long way to go in terms of roster building, but they’re on the right track.

“The team lost safety Kamren Curl and cornerback Kendall Fuller and is hoping new head coach Dan Quinn can lead a defense that doesn’t look great on paper.”

Second-overall pick and Heisman Trophy winner quarterback Jayden Daniels figures to be a franchise player at center, and the team used the draft to bring surrounding talent to the DMV.

Clearly, the team did what it should have done after posting a 4-13 record, the worst it’s ever been last season. However, as mentioned, building a roster takes time, and there will certainly be holes in the current iteration of the roster.

Pro Football Focus recently ranked every NFL secondary, which placed the Commanders pretty low in the league. Washington’s secondary ranked 30th out of 32 teams, just ahead of the Arizona Cardinals and New York Giants.

“The Commanders’ highest-rated cover player in 2023 is cornerback Jartavius Martin, who earned a grade of 58.8. The team lost safety Kamren Curl and cornerback Kendall Fuller and is hoping new head coach Dan Quinn can coach a secondary that doesn’t look great on paper. They selected cornerback Mike Sainristil from Michigan and Michael Davis is coming in from Los Angeles, but it will take great coaching to elevate this group,” Pro Football Focus wrote.

Last season, the Commanders gave up 4,627 passing yards and 39 touchdowns, which was the worst in the league. While there hasn’t been any obvious improvement at cornerback, rookie nickel Mike Sainristil is the only bright spot at the position heading into the upcoming season.

Obviously, Commanders can only solve so many problems within the organization at a time, so keep an eye out for the team improving the roster in this area in the future.
