Guest Post: A Message from the Chairman of the Crow Wing County Council – Brainerd Dispatch

Eighteen months ago, the citizens of Crow Wing County District 2 elected me as their county commissioner. I had previously served the City of Jenkins as mayor for the past 15 years, so I thought I had an idea of what county government would be like. Well, let me tell you, it has been a bit of a learning curve when you go from observing from the outside to having a front row seat. I see how respected Crow Wing County is in the state by many other counties because we are a leader in so many areas. I have been honored to work with and witness the dedication of the staff who ensure the needs of county residents are met. There is a culture and work environment that makes our county one of the best places in Minnesota to live, work and play. I serve in the northern part of Crow Wing County. There are four other commissioners who represent other areas of the county. Even though we come from different backgrounds and have different life experiences, each of us strives to do what is best for the people who elected us. What I found refreshing is that we have respect for one another, which means we can disagree and focus on what is best for the citizens we serve.

In January, I was appointed County Board Chair, which gave me a different perspective on some of the duties and responsibilities of county operations. I have been fortunate to work with and benefit from County Administrator Tim Houle, who provided me with direction and support even before I was elected to the board. When I was elected, Tim stated that I would serve on the board that found his replacement. Tim has been in county government for 30 years and has served our county well for the past 16 years. Under his leadership, we have created a strong vision for our county culture. He is constantly looking forward, not in the rearview mirror. It is his collaboration that truly connects each community and defines our role in making and keeping Crow Wing County one of Minnesota’s favorite places to be. Tim will be retiring on July 12th. While I will miss his mentorship, I wish him a happy and well-deserved retirement. Working with Tim, I have found him to be what you would call a true servant leader. Tim has also worked hard to develop staff, which means we have a strong pipeline in our county for others to rise through the ranks in our growing county. This has allowed us a smooth transition for Debby Erickson to take on this role as our next County Administrator. Debby has been with our county for 30 years and has been a strong leader with local government experience. I am very grateful to have worked with Tim and look forward to our future with our new County Administrator, Debby Erickson.
