With the score at 0-0 after 120 minutes, the match ended on penalties.

Les Bleus eventually won after substitute Joao Felix hit the post.

They will now face Spain in the semi-finals next week.

After celebrating the victory, France captain Mbappe spent time talking to Ronaldo’s family.

He also took a photo with the Real Madrid legend’s mother, Maria, and his two sisters, Katia and Elma.

Elma shared the photo on social media with a classy comment that read: “Great player, I wish you the best.”

Ronaldo’s family spent a day together in Hamburg ahead of the quarter-final.

They enjoyed a meal at Portuguese restaurant Ola Lisboa in the afternoon before heading to the Volksparkstadion.

Katia, Elma and Co. then enjoyed the match from a private box.

Earlier this week, Ronaldo confirmed that Euro 2024 would be his last European Championship.

Fans are convinced Cristiano Ronaldo made a major mistake before the penalty shootout that could have cost Portugal dearly against France

He told RTP: “It’s definitely the last Euro (for me), of course yes.

“But I’m not emotional about it. I’m moved by everything that football involves, by the enthusiasm I have for the game, the enthusiasm I see in the fans, having my family here, the passion of the people… It’s not about leaving the world of football. What else can I do or win?”

Roberto Martinez declined to comment on the 39-year-old’s future after the match.

The Portuguese coach said: “It’s too early and too raw after the match to talk about it and no individual decisions have been taken.”

Mbappe grew up idolising Ronaldo and had posters of the five-time Ballon d’Or winner on his bedroom walls.

The Frenchman recently admitted that it would be impossible to replicate Ronaldo’s legacy at Real Madrid, having recently completed a free transfer to the Santiago Bernabeu.

He said: “There will never be another Cristiano Ronaldo. He shaped football, inspired generations, scored goals and won cups. He knew how to reinvent himself. He is one of a kind.”

“I am following my own path. My dream of playing for Real Madrid is coming true.

“I hope to leave my mark on football and be unique at Real Madrid, but I’m not writing the next chapter in its history.

“I have total respect for him. I can only sing his praises.

“Over time, I had the chance to get to know him, to meet him and to know him. We are still in touch. He follows my life, gives me advice.

“Playing against him is always an honour. No matter what happens next, he will remain a football legend.”
