More details emerge in Dodgers’ massive trade offer for top starting pitcher

The Los Angeles Dodgers have reportedly made a massive offer to acquire Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Garrett Crochet. According to MLB insider Bob Nightengale, the White Sox have turned down the Dodgers’ preliminary offer.

“They also made an offer for Garrett Crochet from the White Sox,” Nightengale told Doug McKain of Dodgers Nation. “The White Sox turned it down, it wasn’t enough. But that’s kind of an X-factor. Crochet has already pitched 15 innings more than his career high, so are you going to have the guy available in September and October? If so, it’ll probably be in a limited role in the bullpen.”

Crochet is expected to be a top target for several teams at the deadline, and the Dodgers are trying to continue to try to acquire him.

“I think they’re going to continue to pursue him until he gets traded,” Nightengale added. “You know the Dodgers have never traded that star prospect that came back to haunt them, so they’ve been good about it. And I think the White Sox are saying, ‘You know what, we’ve got 15 teams on this guy, we know he’s a valuable asset, we want to hurt, and we want somebody’s top two or three players to give up a hook.’ He only makes $800,000, you’ve got him through 2026.”

The Dodgers need another starting pitcher and depth at the position due to injuries to Walker Buehler, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Clayton Kershaw. Even if all of those players are healthy for the playoffs, having another player ready will be essential in case one of the pitchers struggles or gets injured.

Crochet, 25, is 6-6 this season with a 3.02 ERA and 141 strikeouts. He ranks first in MLB in strikeouts and 13th in ERA. He pitched even better than those numbers suggest over the last two months, in May and June. In three of his five starts in May, Crochet held opponents scoreless, posting a 0.93 ERA.

In June, he continued his winning ways with a 1.91 ERA and became the American League Pitcher of the Month. With that kind of play, it’s no wonder the Dodgers are looking for him.
