Who is Davis Thompson's Caddy? Meet Joe Etter

Davis Thompson only earned his PGA Tour card at the start of the 2022/23 season but has already made a name for himself, having posted three runner-up finishes and five top-10s in his first 50 starts.

But in his quest for that elusive first Tour victory, the University of Georgia graduate recently changed caddies at the end of his freshman season.

The 25-year-old worked with Dean Emerson leading up to the Wyndham Championship in August last year, with the pair’s best result coming at the American Express earlier in the season.

Thompson was at the top of the leaderboard in California and led Jon Rahm all the way, but ultimately fell one shot short of a playoff after the American’s long putt on the penultimate hole hit the flag but stayed above the ground.

The remainder of the season was a difficult one for Thompson and he only managed two top-30 finishes before deciding to make a change to his team. At one point during the nearly six-week break he took in August and September, Thompson called upon the services of Joe Etter.

Thompson’s new caddie, Etter, has been a professional player since 2011 and has worked his way up through Q-School before reaching the Nationwide Tour (Korn Ferry Tour) and finally the PGA Tour, teaming up with the likes of Chris Kirk, Harris English and Patton Kizzire along the way.

His two victories as a caddie came with Kizzire — the first was the 2017 OHL Classic in Mayakoba (what is now the World Wide Technology Championship) and the second was the 2018 Sony Open in Hawaii. But after more than three years together, Etter left Kizzire and teamed up with Kyle Stanley for a while before joining Thompson’s bag.

According to an interview he gave to the Caddie Network, Etter’s favorite golf memory was watching Tiger Woods win the Masters in 1997.

As for his favorite memory as a caddie, Etter — who was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin and supports the Packers — said it was being in the clubhouse lead as Scott Langley’s looper at the 2014 Valspar Championship. Langley went on to finish third at 5-under par after a 1-under Sunday.

Etter did not play college golf while attending the University of Wisconsin-Platteville from 1995 to 1999 and has said that Tiger Woods is his favorite golfer. In his dream, he would be the 15-time Major winner, along with his father and former Packers (now Jets) quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
