KPrincess of Wales Kate Middleton has shared an encouraging message to Andy Murray after the disappointing end to his career at Wimbledon.

“An incredible Wimbledon career comes to an end,” Middleton said, via a message shared on Instagram on Saturday. “You should be very proud @andymurray. On behalf of all of us, thank you!”

The Instagram story took place against a plain white background and was signed with the letter “C,” the first initial of his full name. Middleton also shared the post on the official X account (formerly Twitter) belonging to the Prince and Princess of Wales.

Middleton, 42, has yet to attend a match at Wimbledon 2024, but she is a known fan of the tournament and has been a royal figure for many years, attending every year but one since her marriage to Prince William. She is a patron of the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club (AELTC) at Wimbledon and has previously had the pleasure of watching the matches from the royal box with the Prince of Wales and their children, Prince George, 10, and Princess Charlotte, nine.

She also presented the grand trophy to several Wimbledon champions, including Novak Djokovic, Elena Rybakina and Marketa Vondrousova.

Speculation continues as to whether Middleton will participate in the tournament this year amid her ongoing cancer treatment, having attended the annual Trooping of the Colour parade in June. Ahead of her appearance in the King’s Birthday Parade, Middleton shared a personal note on social media, saying she was “hoping to attend a few public engagements over the summer,” but knew she was not yet “out of the woods” when it came to her treatment. While she has yet to attend the parade so far, she has continued to show her support via social media.

Murray’s Wimbledon career ended when his mixed doubles partner Emma Raducanu suffered problems with her right wrist and was forced to withdraw from the competition before their first round match.

Murray, 37, is a two-time Wimbledon champion, winning the prize in 2013 and 2016. When he won in 2013, he was the first Briton in 77 years to lift the trophy. Murray is still expected to compete at the 2024 Paris Olympics, which begin later this month.

This isn’t the first time Murray and Middleton have met on social media, or in real life. The Princess of Wales reportedly shared a handwritten note when Murray won the championship in 2013, and they’ve stayed in touch ever since. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the two surprised young tennis fans with a video call on what was supposed to be Wimbledon’s final weekend.
