So who is Davis Thompson, the latest PGA Tour winner?

A resident of St. Simons Island, Georgia, his first name is easy to confuse with that of longtime resident and World Golf Hall of Famer Davis Love III. He also shares the same last name as another Tour winner who lives on the Golden Isles, Michael Thompson.

But David Thompson made a name for himself with a final-round 64 Sunday to win the John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill. He made eight birdies, starting with a 44-foot putt on the first hole.

What did Davis Thompson get for his first Tour win?

Aside from a $1,440,000 check, the main benefit Thompson gets is a spot in the British Open at Troon in two weeks. It will be his fifth major championship appearance. Thompson also collected 500 FedEx Cup points and moved up from 51st to 22nd in the standings.

How many former Georgia Bulldogs have won on the PGA Tour?

Thompson is the latest in a long list of PGA Tour winners who played for Chris Haack at the University of Georgia. The list includes: Bubba Watson, Hudson Swafford, Kevin Kisner, Chris Kirk, Harris English, Russell Henley, Brian Harman, Keith Mitchell, Sepp Straka and Brendon Todd. All but Watson, Kisner, Kirk, Henley and Todd live on the Golden Isles.

And the Dawgs must love the Midwest. Straka won the John Deere Classic last year and Harman in 2017.

Davis Thompson has been on an upward trend

Victory is in the works. In his last seven starts, Thompson has won, tied for second twice (including last week at the Rocket Mortgage Classic), tied for ninth at the U.S. Open and made six cuts. But he first came to prominence last year when he faced Jon Rahm in The American Express, losing by one stroke.

Davis Thompson Follows His Father to Georgia

Thompson has strong golfing genes. His father Todd played for the Bulldogs from 1985 to 1988 and was team captain in 1987 and 1988.

Davis Thompson can play a little hoop

Thompson is a very good athlete. He was part of the Lee-Scott Academy basketball team in Auburn, Alabama, when it won the state championship in 2016. He won two individual state titles in golf and led Lee-Scott to six team state titles.

While at Georgia, Thompson was named the 2021 SEC Player of the Year and medaled in two NCAA Regionals, in 2019 and 2022.

What is Davis Thompson’s weakness?

According to his PGA Tour bio, these are double-stuffed Oreos.
