Several ScotRail services cancelled due to ongoing pay dispute

Several ScotRail services across Scotland were disrupted on Sunday due to an ongoing pay dispute.

Travel across the country has been cancelled, with passengers told there is a shortage of drivers.

Services have been either reduced to an hourly schedule or cancelled, including in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Alloa, Motherwell, Helensburgh, Milngavie and Larkhall.

The move comes after union Aslef informed ScotRail on Friday that it would recommend a referendum among its members for industrial action over a pay dispute.

The union has confirmed that some train drivers will no longer work extra shifts on Sundays or do overtime, which will have a major impact on services across the country.

Kevin Lindsay, organiser of Aself Scotland, said the Scottish government should have anticipated the problems.

He said: “The Scottish Government should have foreseen these problems a mile away. It is clear that no lessons have been learned from the past. They have left Scotland’s rail workforce understaffed and overworked.”

“The goodwill of Scottish train drivers can only take you so far, but you can’t run a safe and efficient railway seven days a week if you don’t employ the right numbers of staff and provide them with decent pay and conditions.

“The Scottish Government is the sole shareholder in ScotRail and yet has failed utterly to address the driver shortage.

“This is a crisis entirely of their making and ultimately it is the passengers who will suffer.”
