Two fugitive murder suspects who escaped from Mississippi prison arrested after manhunt

(HAZLEHURST, Miss.) — Mississippi police said Saturday they arrested two murder suspects who escaped from a jail early Friday morning.

Tyrekennel Collins, 24, and Dezarrious Johnson, 18, were found in an abandoned home around noon Saturday by officers after a 33-hour manhunt, police said.

The suspects, who escaped from the Claiborne County Detention Center around 2:20 a.m. Friday, were considered armed and dangerous, authorities said.

“When someone is in jail and charged with murder, we arrest them as quickly as possible because we don’t want them to get out and hurt other people,” Jefferson County Sheriff James Bailey said, according to WAPT.

The sheriff’s office livestreamed on its Facebook page how officers took the suspects away in a police SUV.

“Early this morning, two inmates escaped from the Claiborne County Detention Center,” the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement posted on social media Friday. “The escape occurred around 2:20 a.m..”

Sheriff Edward Goods said the two suspects were caught on camera escaping through the ceiling and leaving the exterior wall behind, according to ABC News affiliate WAPT in Jackson, Mississippi.

Both suspects are charged with murder. Collins was being held in Copiah County for a crime while Johnson, a Natchez-area native, was being held in Jefferson County, according to the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Department.
