Katie Price donates £5,000 to animal welfare charity to stop owning pets

Animal welfare group PETA has stepped up pressure on Katie Price to give up her pets for good, offering her £5,000 if she promises never to have another one.

The star has been criticised for the deaths of seven animals in her care in recent years and has been criticised by animal charities and animal lovers alike.

Now that Price welcomed a new Sphynx kitten in January – the same month she gave away her last puppy, Tank – PETA has written her an open letter offering her £5,000 and “a stunning range of beautiful stuffed animals” if she agrees to sign a legal document promising not to accept any more pets.

What did PETA say to Katie Price?

PETA Vice President Elisa Allen wrote: “While your intentions may be good, the ever-growing number of animals who have died on your watch or been given away is impossible to ignore, and people are rightly concerned.

“Whatever reasons you give for their suffering, abandonment or disappearance, the fact is that you are constantly harming these sensitive and sentient individuals, and I hope you will agree that this is a solution.”

The letter also referred to Price’s financial difficulties, continuing: “While accepting this sum may go some way to helping you overcome your financial difficulties, it will also show that you are willing to acknowledge that your home is not pet-friendly – and that’s okay. Many people would love to have a pet, but not everyone can or should.”

“Such a decision would be applauded by your fans, would show your children that there are considerations beyond what someone simply wants, and would send a message to everyone that you intend to act in the best interests of living, sentient beings.”

PETA added that the offer to sign the legally binding contract was valid for 12 months and wrote: “As an added incentive, we would be delighted to send you a stunning range of beautiful animal plush toys to feature in your social media posts and share with your children.”

The Tragedies of Katie Price

The mother of five has lost five dogs, a horse and a chameleon since 2017, sparking outrage among animal lovers and conservation groups.

In 2017, her horse escaped from a field and was hit by a car, while in 2020, 2022 and 2023, her dogs Sparkle, Sharon and Blade also died after being killed in road accidents. Another dog, Queenie, died in 2018 after being hit by a delivery driver, a chameleon, Marvin, died the same year, and a puppy, Rolo, died in 2020 a few weeks after she got him by choking in an electric wheelchair.

She also had to give up her dog Bear after several near misses when he ran off onto a road and attacked another animal, while another dog, Precious, was reportedly given to a production crew member of one of her TV shows.

What did Katie Price say?

After losing her beloved dog Blade in 2023, Price lashed out at those who suggested she shouldn’t have pets, saying in an Instagram post: “Who says I shouldn’t have pets? Tell me why I shouldn’t have pets? Tell me why? I’m gonna prove you wrong, you bunch of say-it-all, believe-it-all motherfuckers.”

“I contacted the RSPCA and they ticked all the boxes to say my animals are healthy – they ticked all the boxes.”

In 2020, a petition was launched calling for Price to be banned from owning any other pets, and it garnered over 36,000 signatures – but the star was reportedly devastated by the petition.

His representatives said at the time: “This is a devastating blow because it is totally biased, based on hearsay and not on real facts.

“Katie loves her animals and to pretend otherwise is incorrect, unfair and mean. Nothing could be further from the truth.”

Price was heartbroken by the most recent death of one of her pets, Blade, in June 2023, writing on Instagram: “Worlds cannot express the loss of my best friend, my protector, my absolute everything, who sadly passed away today. I have no words to express how I feel but I am numb and shocked, rip Blade.”

But after Blade’s death, a PETA statement said: “After the death of a seventh animal in her care, Katie Price should face more than the court of public opinion – she should face a court of law and be banned for life from owning animals.

“PETA urges authorities to investigate Blade’s death and reminds the public that Price is not the only one with blood on her hands.

“The greedy breeders who continue to sell or ‘gift’ animals to him are also to blame, because they know full well what the likely outcome will be.”
