Stampedes in Puri Jagannath and Hathras: How to protect yourself in case of stampede? | Health

Large and fervent crowds are a feature of many Indian religious gatherings and can sometimes get out of hand due to mismanagement by the organizers. The most recent examples are the Puri Jagannath Yatra and the Hathras stampedes. While participating in such processions may be unavoidable for many people due to their spiritual inclinations, steps should be taken to ensure that your life is not in danger if the crowd loses its balance at any point. What should you do if you ever find yourself caught in such a crowd with a risk of stampede?

Here are some measures taken by the National Disaster Management Authority of India:
1) Familiarize yourself with the exit routes before attending an event with a large gathering.
2) Wear light, simple and breathable cotton clothing.
3) If a stampede breaks out, remain calm and follow the instructions given by the authorities.
4) Place your hand like a boxer in front of your chest, to protect it. Continue moving towards the crowd.
5) As soon as the crowd thins out, move laterally. Also, be aware of open spaces.
6) Stay away from barricades, walls or small doors.
7) If you fall, get up as quickly as possible. If you are injured and cannot get up, curl up like a fetus. Cover your head with your arms.
